Acne is possibly the most commonly occurring of all skin disorders and is particularly prevalent among teenagers. The condition is characterized by the appearance of pimples, spots and similar blemishes on the skin. The face, chest and back are most commonly affected, but it can also affect other areas. This condition occurs when the pores on your skin get clogged or blocked with dead skin cells, oil and bacteria.

Acne is caused mainly due to hormonal changes, which explains its prevalence among teenagers and it passes with age. Apart from hormonal changes there are factors that can contribute to or cause an acne outbreak. Hormonal disorders, heredity, a faulty diet, certain drugs or medications, poor hygiene, certain cosmetics, stress and certain environmental conditions can also hasten the appearance of acne.

There are a wide variety of medications and applications easily available over the counter for the treatment of acne. But many of these medications contain harsh chemicals that may cause a reaction or damage your skin. You need to be particularly cautious when dealing with sensitive skin. Natural remedies and treatments are therefore preferable as they are completely safe and free of any side effects. Moreover they are inexpensive and easily available. Here are some useful home remedies that should help treat your son's acne condition.

One of the most effective traditional remedies for acne is a mixture of sandalwood and turmeric powder. Mix the two with a little water to make a paste and apply it onto the affected skin. Honey has tremendous healing properties and a mixture of honey with cinnamon powder can be used as an effective acne remedy. Leave it on overnight and wash off with warm water. Keep doing this every day for at least a fortnight.

You can also use a paste made with nutmeg and unboiled milk as a topical application.

Crush some cumin seed to make a paste with water. Add some neem juice in and apply the mixture on the affected region.

While these remedies should be quite useful and they are effective in treating acne, relying solely on remedies while neglecting diet and lifestyle will only offer temporary relief at best. Make certain that your son follows these recommendations:

  • A poor diet will increase the risk of future outbreaks and their severity as well. Cut down on the junk foods, oily foods, caffeinated drinks, aerated drinks and chocolate and increase his consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits.
  • Make sure that his fluid intake is adequate.
  • Bowel movements should be healthy and regular.
  • Skin should always be kept clean.
  • He will also need to avoid getting too stressed out.
  • Never squeeze or scratch at pimples.
