The skin on your lips is extremely sensitive and delicate and needs to be cared for and treated accordingly. This skin can easily suffer damage as a result of exposure to the elements or as a result of cosmetic products. To keep your lips looking healthy and the best they can, you need to address or treat lip problems as and when they arise. Ignoring them or failing to treat them promptly can simply accentuate the damage and cause more severe problems.
Dry and chapped lips are generally caused as a result of damaged skin and dehydrated tissues. Emotional and environmental factors like stress, wind, heat and cold also take their toll. To treat the condition you therefore need to address all the issues. You need to give your skin the much needed moisture and treat the damaged skin. At the same time it's important that you eliminate or minimize exposure to conditions that contribute to the problem.
Peeling lips may also indicate an allergic reaction to either your cosmetics or to a medication. Certain foods may also cause such a reaction. Since you mentioned that you have used a new lip gloss, it is most likely the cause of the reaction. In most cases removing the allergen solves the problem and the damage is repaired naturally within a few days. If you haven't already put away the new lip gloss then do so. If despite having done this you find that there is no change or the situation worsens you will need to evaluate any changes recently that may cause a reaction.
Follow these natural remedies to treat your condition safely and effectively at home.
- Hydrate your lip skin with a cool salt water compress or soak. Do this every day using a teaspoon of salt in a pint of water. Soak a cloth in the water when cool and leave it on your lips for a while to moisten and cool the lips. Don't rub your lips dry after this; instead pat it to remove excess water.
- To retain the moisture after using a compress, apply an emollient ointment lavishly. Vaseline or any lip balm containing lanolin or waxes will help.
- If the compresses and emollients don't solve your problem use a hydrocortisone ointment before applying an emollient.
- Licking your lips may be an involuntary action or something you do to moisturize your lips, but you need to stop doing this. Licking your lips worsens the problem as the moisture thus added evaporates rapidly and with it natural oils and moisture as well. This off course means that your lips just end up a lot drier.
- Sunburn is extremely damaging to your lips and can be avoided easily. Use a lip balm that also offers sun protection or sunscreen.
In addition to these tips, make sure that your fluid intake is adequate. Your diet is also important so include a lot of fresh fruits and veggies in your diet.
