Tanning as a result of exposure to sunlight is completely normal and natural, and you should not worry yourself about it. Your beauty does not depend on your fairness, it depends on a combination of several factors, including your complexion (this is the quality of your skin, rather than the color) and the way you groom and carry yourself. In fact many people like tanned skin and find it more beautiful than fair skin, which they consider pale and insipid. Finally, each person has his or her own idea of what is beautiful, but for your own sake, it is important that you appreciate yourself and avoid being unnecessarily critical.

When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it starts producing more of the pigment melanin, so as to block the harmful UV rays from the sun. This is what is known as a tan, and it will last for several months, depending upon how severe the tan is and how much melanin has been produced. It also depends upon how much exposure to sunlight you continue to have. If your skin continues to be exposed to sunlight on a regular basis, then it will continue to produce more melanin, and will either maintain the tan or become still more tanned. If on the other hand, you reduce the exposure to sunlight, your skin will stop producing so much melanin, and the excess of melanin will slowly be discarded. There are some home remedies that claim to speed up this process, and if you like, you can try them - however, you should note that they have little, if any, effectiveness.

One remedy involves rubbing your skin with fresh tomato juice - tomatoes are thought to have bleaching properties, which will lighten your skin if used on a daily basis. Similarly, using potato juice or simply rubbing a slice of potato on your skin is thought to help it become lighter. Lemon juice is another natural bleach, and you can try rubbing a little lemon juice on your skin once a day. Be sure to wash it off after a while, and avoid going out into sunlight for at least a couple of hours afterwards. Another home remedy uses honey, turmeric powder, and sandalwood powder - mix the two powders in a teaspoon of honey (or a tablespoon, depending upon how much you think you will need) to make a thin paste, and apply this paste to your skin. Wash it off after half an hour.
