Hair color is determined by a pigment called melanin, which is produced at the root of hair. When the melanin production is affected or stopped hair starts graying. Usually, melanin production starts decreasing with growing age, but there may be several reasons for premature graying of hairs. Heredity, illness, vitamin deficiency, stressful lifestyle are some of the common causes of premature graying. Sometimes, certain medical disorders or use of certain drugs may also lead to malfunctioning of melanin producing glands. Smoking and pollution are also linked to premature graying of hair. It is important to take steps to prevent premature graying at the earliest because hair graying is usually irreversible. That is, once the hair is gray it cannot be made to change its color again. Remedial measures will only be able to help contain further graying, but cannot bring back the original color of already grayed hair. It is also advisable to consult a dermatologist and find out what exactly is the cause of your gray hair, and then treat it accordingly.

Here are a few homemade remedies that you can try out to prevent premature graying of hair. Indian gooseberry is one of the most widely used remedy for gray hairs. You can use the juice of this fruit to massage your scalps regularly. Powdered Indian gooseberry can also be mixed with coconut oil and lemon juice and applied on your head. In case you cannot find Indian gooseberry easily, you can also use hair oils that contain Indian gooseberry extract. Another effective remedy for gray hair is to apply a paste of henna powder, yogurt, and fenugreek seed powder. Keep this paste applied for about half an hour and then wash off with water. Do not leave this paste applied on your hair for too long because henna powder, being a natural dye, may turn your hair reddish brown.

Diet also plays an important part in preventing premature graying of hairs. Eat protein rich foods like eggs, meat, sprouts, cereals, and dairy products. You should also ensure that your diet contains plenty of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. If you are still deficient in minerals and vitamins, you will need to take special medical supplements in consultation with your doctor. Vitamin A and B along with minerals like iron, copper, and zinc are known to prevent hair graying.

Finally, ensure that the cosmetics you use are suitable for your hair type. If you feel that your shampoo or conditioner is affecting your hair adversely, you should change them immediately.
