Applying nail polish over a toe nail fungus infection

Can I use nail polish while treating a toe nail fungus, it helps covering the damaged nail, but I want to know if it's a good idea or better to keep the nails clean from any polish?

Toenail fungus is an infection and nail polish contains a lot of strong chemicals, which will make your problem worse. Please do not apply any nail polish at all until your toenail is healthy again. And yes it's a great idea to keep your toenails free from nail polish till the infection is totally gone. A fungal infection generally occurs due to poor hygiene. Toenail fungus is no exception. It is common in warm moist places like swimming areas, gym lockers and spas. So if you frequent such places make sure you have an extra pair of your personal slippers to wear. Do not roam around with bare feet at such places. Wash your feet clean with an antibacterial soap and dry them thoroughly after you're done. If you cut your toenails too short and or wear tight shoes most of the time then the toe nails start to grow inside the skin. This is also know as ingrown nails, it happens due to too much pressure on the toes and is very painful. The heat and sweat build up inside the shoes and the exposure to dirt causes bacterial infection leading to toe nail fungus. Toenail fungus is contagious and it should not be ignored as it can spread to the other toes if not properly treated. Please get your feet medically examined. Your doctor will be able to determine the severity of the problem and prescribe a proper treatment for it. Carelessness and neglect can spread the infection and lead to loss of toenails. A few general things to keep in mind while treating a toenail fungus are:

  • Always keep your feet clean and dry. Use an antibacterial powder while wearing shoes to prevent sweating. Your doctor will probably prescribe one for you.
  • Avoid wearing tight fitting footwear. Wear sandals or comfortable shoes with cotton socks as this fabric helps to absorb the sweat and keep your feet dry. Also make sure that you clean your shoes from the inside.
  • Do not share your personal belongings like towels, socks, shoes, and slippers etc. as this would increase the chance of infection.

Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties and is known to cure skin infections. Take equal quantities of warm water and apple cider vinegar in a small tub. Mix well and soak your feet in it for 20 minutes then dry using a soft towel. This helps to treat and control the fungal infection.
