Scabies is an infection of the skin and is very contagious. It is caused by the itch mites. The female mite lays 2 - 3 eggs daily under the skin. They hatch and then continue this cycle. If left untreated this can rapidly spread all over the body therefore immediate medical is essential. They are too small to be seen without being magnified. Extreme itching after a bath or at night is a common symptom of scabies. It spreads through direct skin contact with an infected person and by using personal belongings like towels, clothes, shoes, etc of an infected person. So it is equally important to treat the clothes and bedding of the person to avoid the spread of mites. All the clothes should be washed with hot water to kill the mites. Along with this the people living with the infected person in the same house should also be treated. Some home remedies are as listed below.

Rub garlic over the affected area. This is known to kill the mites thus curing scabies. Evening primrose oil is known to effectively relieve the itching and kill the mites. It also helps to sooth the irritated skin. You can try the following mix as a body wash. Boil 5 cups of water and add 5 tablespoons of dried rosemary herb to it. Let steep for 20 - 25 minutes. After it cools, strain the mix and use this to wash the affected area at least 3 times a day. Tea tree oil is very helpful as it penetrates the deeper layers of the skin easily and kills the itch causing mites and the eggs. Add 6 - 7 drops of tea tree oil to ¾ cup of olive oil. Mix well and apply this on the affected area to sooth and heal the skin. Onion skins are also effective in treating scabies. Take the peels of six onions and boil them in water. Cool and strain this and then apply all over the body. This helps to sooth the itching caused by scabies and other skin conditions. Aloe vera gel is also very useful in soothing the irritated skin. Spoon out the gel directly from the leaves and apply it on the affected area. Or you could buy pure aloe vera gel from the health food store. Oatmeal also helps to sooth the skin. Add it to your bath water and soak in it to relieve the itching.
