Tinea Versicolor is a yeast infection caused by Pityrosporum ovale which affects the skin, interfering with the normal tanning process of the skin. This yeast is normally present in the skin and does not cause any harm except in certain circumstances such a humidity and heat. This is the main reason why the condition is more common amongst people living in warm and humid climatic zones. Other factors that contribute to tinea versicolor are burns, use of oral contraceptives, consumption of steroids, hormonal imbalances during pregnancy and even mal nutrition. The condition is primarily characterized by spots of lighter skin which gradually increase and merge to form larger patches. Exposure to heat during a shower or exercise causes the patient's skin to become pinkish or redden. The patient also complains of itching and the skin may peel in scales resembling ashes. The symptoms get aggravated due to exposure to increased heat and sweating during any kind of physical activity.

Sulphur is known to have antifungal and antibacterial properties and is commonly used to treat various skin conditions. You can use sulphur in the form of ointments which come in combinations such as sodium sulphacetamide and salicylic acid and cane be applied on the affected areas. You can even apply anti-dandruff shampoo that contains selenium sulfide on the affected areas. Apart from this you can benefit from a homeopathy remedy, Sulfur 200. You should take 1 dose of this powder every third day, before sleeping for a fortnight. You can follow this treatment with tablets of Calcarea Sulph12 after two weeks. You should have 5 tablets, thrice a day for a period of at least one month. Apart from this, you can also apply the anti-fungal creams easily available over the counter to combat the symptoms. It is also important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet and a hygiene regime to treat and prevent re-occurrence of tinea versicolor. You should have at least one bowl of curd daily since it contains acidophilus which controls the levels of bacteria in the system and helps to control the spread of the infection to other parts of the body. You should also increase the amount of water you drink, to flush out all toxins from your body and keep it fighting fit. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in proteins and vitamins and enriching your diet with antioxidants such as tomatoes will help to keep your immune system strong and help your body to fight and prevent such infections.
