Acromegaly or Muccopolysacharidosis is a medical condition characterised by development of lumps on the lips of swelling of the lips. It can also lead to scaling of the lips, bleeding and a change in the lip color and texture from its healthy pinkish red to a brownish black tint. However swollen lips may also be due to other factors such as nutritional deficiencies, particularly deficiency of Vitamin B. In this case, there is a swelling on the corners of the lips and the patient might not be able to open his mouth and jaws properly. Swollen lips can also be a result of a viral infection, known as lip herpes which causes swelling of the lips and blisters. Swollen lips can also caused due to an injury or cut or when you have been licking your lips too much and too often, especially during winter when the lips get dehydrated and crack due to the wind. It could also be due to an allergy to a food substance or even an allergen in your immediate environment. In order to get rid of swollen lips, it is thus important that you should first identify the cause.
In case you have swollen lips, you should first check the food you have recently consumed and check for any allergies. If the swelling of lips is a more regular occurrence or a chronic situation, you should check for allergies to substances in your surrounding environment. Sometimes an allergy to the materials used in your pillows and mattresses as well as your cover could cause swollen lips, so you should consider changing your bed linen, pillows and mattress. Apart from this, for swollen lip treatment you should drink plenty of water to keep your body and lips well-hydrated and avoid licking your lips. Always check the lipsticks and lip-balms you use for allergies before you use them and make sure your lips are moisturized with a good lip-balm or moisturizer with sunscreen before you step out into the sun. In addition to this, it is important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet rich in Vitamins especially Vitamin B. A good home remedy for swollen lips is application of salt water on the lips using a cotton ball. This is especially effective when the lips are swollen due to an injury or a cut. However this is not advised if there is no cut and in that case, the best and immediate remedy for swollen lips is application of ice. You can place of a small ice-pack or even an ice-cube on your lips for a few minutes. This will reduce the swelling. If you prefer not using an ice cube directly you can place a spoon in the freezer for a few minutes and hold that against your lips.
