Pink eye or conjunctivitis is a highly contagious disease which usually affects children. The condition is characterized by reddening of the eyes so that they appear pinkish in color, itching and watering of the eyes accompanied by a slight pain and difficulty in focusing on anything for long. Since children are a little careless about hygiene and tend to rub their eyes transferring germs from their hands to their eyes, it normally affects children more than adults. If you are suffering from pink eye and want to treat pink eye, it is crucial to maintain strict hygiene rituals and keep you eyes as clean as possible. Do not rub your eyes even when they itch because this will only increase the irritation and reddening. Also keep your hands sanitized and clean to avoid worsening the infection. Avoid reading, watching television of straining your eyes by working at the computer if you have pink eye. This will only worsen the condition.

Apart from this, there are several simple home remedies for pink eye. You can use apple to treat itchy pink eye or conjunctivitis. You can soak a cotton swab in the juice of a cooked apple and use it to wipe the eyes. Alternately you can prepare a poultice of grated, raw apple and apply it to the eyes. A treatment of application of an ice pack will help to reduce the swelling. Avoid applying any heat to the eye since this will only increase the itching and worsen the reddening of the eyes. Castor oil is also said to be beneficial in soothing the irritation and preventing pink eye. You can gently wipe the eye lids with a cotton swab smeared with some castor oil, but take care not to let it enter the eye. Like castor oil almond oil, apricot oil and even coconut oil is said to be beneficial for removing pink eye. You can gently massage the eyes after dabbing a few drops of these oils on the eyes lids. This will soothe the irritation and exhaustion felt by the eyes and also reduces the reddening. However, as with castor oil, take adequate care that the oils do not enter the eyes for they will sting. You can also wipe the eyes using a cotton swab soaked in the juice of fresh mint leaves. This will provide a cooling, soothing feeling and reduce the reddening. Once again adequate precautions should be taken to ensure that it does not enter the eyes. Apart from all this, it is also essential to have healthy eyes by sticking to a good hygiene ritual and cleaning the eyes daily by rinsing them with fresh cold water and also be maintaining a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet. You should increase your intake of Vitamin A found in carrots, peaches, red peppers, green leafy vegetables and cod liver oil. You should also exercise your eyes daily to strengthen them and keep them healthy.
