Eczema is a general term for a wide variety of skin-related disorders. The most common condition is called atopic dermatitis, but there are other varieties of eczema as well. Eczema is characterized by inflammation, itchiness, and swelling of skin. Most often, scratching the affected area leads to rashes and bleeding, which further aggravates the condition. In severe cases, it may lead to blisters and oozing wounds. Eczema can affect any part of the body, but it typically occurs on face, neck, elbows, knees, and ankles. The exact cause of eczema is not very clear. Mostly, eczema is a result of abnormal functioning of immune system. It may also appear if there is a family history of eczema. Lot of external agents can trigger eczema in a person. Substances like soaps, detergents, woolen or synthetic clothes, cosmetics and jewelries can cause eczema. Sometimes, changes in weather conditions may also bring about eczema.

Although eczema may not be fully curable there are a number of precautions to prevent to prevent its outbreak. Avoid all substances that irritate the skin, including clothes, soaps, and other cosmetics. It is necessary to keep the skin properly moisturized as a dry skin is more prone to eczema. It is also necessary to identify and avoid any food that might trigger allergy in the body. Eat spices and oils in moderation. Cut down on foods with high mineral content (like ginger and onion). Certain nuts (cashew nuts), vegetables (radish, cucumber), fruits (oranges, watermelons, and papayas), ice-creams, and cold drinks might also trigger eczema and should be avoided.

There are a few home remedies that can be tried for eczema. Oatmeal is considered a useful remedy. Apply a paste of oatmeal on the affected area to get relief from itching. Sandalwood is another home remedy. Take a spoonful each of sandalwood and camphor and make a paste. Apply this paste on the infected area twice a day for about a week. Pulp of mango is also helpful. Boil the pulp of mango in water and let it cool down. Apply the paste on the infected part of skin. A similar method can also be carried out with turmeric powder. Put 2-3 spoonfuls of turmeric powder to water and let it boil for some time at low flame. Let it cool down and then wash the infected area with this solution. An exactly same procedure can be carried out with margosa (neem) leaves, if available. A paste of nutmeg is also useful to treat eczema. Apply the nutmeg paste on the affected area for 2-3 times each day.
