How can I get rid of deep scales along the sides of the soles of my feet? I also have fissures on my heels. I wear rubber flip flops all day, feet are not damp but maybe too dry?

As you have mentioned, your feet are probably too dry and therefore these scales and fissures have appeared on your heels. These scales are fissures, commonly referred to as cracked heels, are caused if the skin around the rim of your heels is too thick and dry. If these fissures and cracks are deep, they cause lot of discomfort and pain. Also, they run the risk of getting infected.

It is not recommended that you wear rubber flip flops all day because it may worsen the condition. Do wear properly fitted footwear that covers the feet completely. There can be multiple reasons for cracked heels. Some people have naturally dry skin and therefore are more prone to have cracked heels. It can also happen if one has to stand for a long duration at work or home as it causes more pressure on the feet and expands the soles sideways. Similarly, overweight people are more at risk as their body weight may put excess pressure on their feet. Sometimes, certain medical conditions can also lead to cracked skin.

The most important thing to do when you have cracked heels is to follow a regular foot care routine. Keep the feet clean and hygienic by washing and cleaning them regularly. Wear fitting shoes, apply proper moisturizing cream to avoid drying of the skin, and rub your soles with pumice stone to reduce the thickness of hard skin. Each day, soak the feet in soapy water for about 15 minutes. After washing and drying your feet apply a mixture of petroleum jelly and lemon juice on the cracked skin. Let the mixture get totally absorbed to the skin. A similar procedure can also be carried out with a mixture of glycerin and rosewater. Melted paraffin wax mixed with mustard oil is another remedy you can try. Apply this mixture on the cracked heels and leave it overnight. Wash your feet in the morning to clean whatever of that mixture remains. You can also apply pulp of ripe banana to soften the skin. Apply the pulp of banana on the cracked skin and leave it for about 10-15 minutes before washing it clean. Also, do follow a diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Eat green vegetables, cereals, whole grains and nuts (source of Vitamin E); milk and milk-based products (source of Calcium); meat, chicken, and fish (source of Iron); oyster and crabs (source of Zinc); flax seeds (source of omega-3 fatty acids).
