Dark spots on the face can occur due to a number of reasons. Usually dark spots and patches on the face are a result of hyperpigmentation - excessive productive of the skin pigment melanin. This normally happens when the skin has been exposed to the sun for a long time and there is increased production of melanocytes - skin cells that produce the pigment melanin. It can also be due to tanning, a direct result of prolonged exposure to the harmful ultra-violet rays of the sun. Sometimes the dark spots are also a result of advancing age coupled with the above mentioned factors, in which case they are referred to as age spots. There are several simple home remedies that can help in treating and gradually getting rid of dark spots. However before starting any treatment you should remember that the dark spots did not appear overnight and probably took years to form, and thus it is not possible to get rid of them overnight. Treatment of dark spots is gradual and can take anything from a few weeks to a few months.
One of the best, tried and tested home remedies for dark spots is application of lemon juice of the affected areas. Lemon is known to act as a natural bleach and this regular application of lemon juice on the affected areas can help to gradually lighten the dark spots. Alternately you can apply a mixture of lemon and honey on the dark spots and wash it off after 15 to 20 minutes using cold water. This helps to lighten the dark spots and improve the texture of the affected skin. Another good home remedy for dark spots is application of a paste of 2 almonds than have been blanched and ground, the white of 1 egg and ½ tsp lemon juice. This can be spread evenly on the face and washed off after 150 to 20 minutes. Regular application of this paste helps to gradually lighten the dark spots. However you should remember that lemon increases the skin's sensitivity to the sunlight and thus you should protect your face adequately when you step out in the sun after this treatment. There are several other home remedies that do not use lemon and be used to treat dark spots. For instance, a face pack prepared by mixing 100 each of dried basil leaves, neem leaves and mint leaves and a pinch of turmeric powder with some rose water is beneficial for reducing spots and can be applied daily on the face. Another good face pack for reducing dark spots can be prepared by mixing saffron powder and honey. This helps to lighten the dark spots and restore a natural and healthy glow to your skin.
