Home Cures for Sun Burns

Tanning of skin is a normal process that occurs when skin is exposed to sunlight. This process is actually protective and beneficial to the skin, but many people see it as a problem because of the perception that fair skin is more beautiful. Exposure to sunlight for long periods of time can damage the skin and cause several health problems if the skin is not protected. To some extent, the skin is able to protect itself but creating more of the skin pigment melanin, which blocks sunlight. This is what creates a tan, and the best “remedy” for this is to avoid the sunlight. Without exposure to sunlight, a tan slowly fades on its own, and skin returns to its natural color.

Beyond a point however, skin is not able to protect itself, which is why it is important to cover yourself adequately if you are going to be outdoors for long, and if for some reason you cannot cover yourself completely — for example, if you are on the beach or in a swimming pool — wear an appropriate sunscreen. Too much exposure to sunlight can result in sunburn, which is usually a mild although painful problem, but can sometimes be serious and also always carries the risk of future skin cancer. For mild sunburn, no real treatment is necessary apart from hydrating the skin using substances like aloe gel and drinking enough water. The skin will peel and itch, and heal on its own in a few weeks.

Natural Treatment for Sun Burn

For skin that has been severely burnt by prolonged exposure to the sun, one of the best and most effective remedies is to apply ice packs. This will provide momentary relief from the burning and stinging that typically accompanies sunburn. Aloe vera gel is also an excellent method to soothe and heal your sunburn. This product has natural healing and skin lightening properties that will work on your sunburn and help it to heal perhaps faster than anything else. You can also apply a thick paste made with clarified butter, rose water and turmeric powder. This will help to heal and disinfect the burnt area.

You can also make a lightly bleaching paste with lime juice, almond powder and milk cream and apply this to your tans. This has excellent healing and skin recovering properties that will go a long way in taking care of the tanned areas. Leave it on for a while and rub off. The milk cream will enable it to come off easily when rubbed with the palm of your hand. Alternately, you can make a cocktail of cucumber and raw potato juice and apply this all over your tanned areas. This will also help to get rid of the tan. This can also be stored in the fridge and used for a while, so you are saved the headache of making it repeatedly. Do remember to refrigerate at once, though, or else it will darken and become useless. Raw potato has the property to darken if left at room temperature.
