The black color of hair comes from a particular chemical called melanin. Melanin is produced at the root of hair by pigment cells. Hair starts to become white when the melanin production at the root of the hair is reduced or stopped altogether. Usually, melanin production gradually starts decreasing with growing age. So, it is common to start getting white hairs as one gets older. However, there are many other factors that might affect graying of hair even at young age. Some of the common causes for premature graying may be illness, vitamin deficiency, unhealthy lifestyle, or even genetic disorders. Vitamin deficiency is found to be one of the common causes of premature white hairs.
There are also some illnesses that might cause premature white hairs. Vitiligo, a medical disorder, is one such illness. Thyroid disorders are also known to cause graying of hair. Sometimes, premature white hair may also be an indication of unhealthy lifestyle. Stressful routine, smoking, exposure to pollution and harmful chemicals are known to have an effect. It is advisable to consult a local dermatologist to find out what could the exact cause of your white hair. If there is an underlying illness or vitamin deficiency, proper medication might be necessary to treat the exact cause.
There are some natural home remedies that are often tried to treat white hairs. However, bear in mind that all natural remedies can only help you check the process of further graying and are not necessarily a cure for already white hair. So, getting all your white hairs to get back to their natural black color may not be completely possible. You should possibly check further deterioration by adopting some of the remedies described.
One of the most used natural remedy is to use Indian gooseberry. Take one teaspoonful of Indian gooseberry powder and mix it with lime juice. Apply the paste on your scalp and leave it for half an hour to forty-five minutes before washing off your hair. You can also eat a spoonful of black strap (un-sulfured molasses) each morning. Black strap is full of essential nutrients and can help prevent white hair. Another helpful remedy is to prepare a decoction of strong black tea and salt, and apply it on hair. Wash off hair after half an hour and avoid shampooing your hair when it is done. Also, make a habit of eating healthy and nourishing foods that are rich in proteins, minerals, and vitamins. And finally, do take some care to choose whatever hair care products you use. Most often, an unsuitable product does more harm to your hair than good.
