You have mentioned that the spots you have developed on your face in the last year may be due to sunburn. If this is the case, then you can start by taking adequate steps to first stop your skin from tanning further. For this, you should start making it a regular practice to apply sunscreen lotion on your face at all times. This is the best way to go about preventing a tan. Use any sunscreen lotion that is available in the market and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of over 30. If the SPF is lower, it may just not work for you, since your skin has already tanned. You should also try to choose a natural or organic lotion, which is specially formulated for sensitive skin. This may work better than just any product off the shelf. You can also use a couple of easy ways to remove the tan, if indeed it is that. You should do a buttermilk scrub on your face. Make your own buttermilk at home by adding a tablespoon of full fat, fresh and unflavored yogurt to a glass of water and whipping it well. You can then dip a cotton ball in this and use it to scrub out your face. This should preferably be done in the night. The next step is to wash your face with plain cold water; the advantage of doing this at night is that it will have a chance to work on your skin all night without the chance of dust or pollutants settling on your face as it well might during the day.

You can also add a few drops of lime juice to this buttermilk for added effect. However, be very careful about the time you use this remedy if you are also using lime juice. The reason for this is that if you expose your skin to the sunlight with any traces of lime juice in it, then you may become darker, as lime reacts very strongly to direct sunlight. You should try these remedies for at least a month before you hope to see results. If you don't see results for as long as a month, then you can conclude that your spots are not caused by an overexposure to sunlight. Instead, you should get a medical opinion on them before you do anything else. Dark marks can appear due to many reasons and trying to resolve them on your own is not safe without knowing their exact cause.
