The complexion of the skin is determined by a natural coloring pigment called melanin. When the skin produces excessive melanin, it leads to irregular dark patches, mostly in areas that are exposed to the sun. This condition, technically referred to as hyperpigmentation, is mostly caused by overexposure to sunlight, minor fungal infections, burns and injuries. Stress and trauma can also cause the appearance of dark spots. Less commonly, insulin resistance in diabetic patients may also lead to hyperpigmentation.

You may follow a few simple home remedies to get rid of the dark patches on your face. Mix a tablespoon of homemade untreated yoghurt with two tablespoons each of oatmeal and fresh tomato juice. Now apply this paste on the dark patches and leave it on for half an hour. Then wash your face with water. Repeat this process every alternate day for eight weeks in order to get a flawless complexion. Another remedy is to use the juice of a raw papaya by mashing it to a pulp and applying it to your face before going to bed every night. Make sure that you wash it off after it dries and then moisturize your skin. You could also make a face mask by mixing the pulp of a small potato, half a cucumber, two teaspoons of fresh lime juice and a tablespoon of yoghurt. After applying this paste on the dark patches cover your face with a hot damp towel for half an hour. Then rinse your face well with cold water and apply moisturizer to prevent dryness of the skin. Lemon is known to be a natural bleaching agent, so apply lemon juice on the dark patches every day as this is an effective way of lightening and reducing them. If the dark patches have appeared due to uneven tanning, apply a mixture of one teaspoon each of honey, milk powder and lemon juice and half a teaspoon of almond oil and apply this on your face. Wash your face after 15 minutes. Alternatively, you could also apply a mixture of turmeric powder and lime juice on the dark patches every day. Another remedy is to grind a few mint leaves and apply the juice extracted from this on the dark patches every day. This visibly reduces dark patches and given the skin a uniform complexion. Besides following these remedies, you should also avoid going out into the sun and apply sunscreen whenever you step out.
