Hair follicles produce an oily substance called sebum, which moisturizes the hair naturally. When the follicles fail to produce an adequate amount of sebum hair looks dry and frizzy. This condition may be caused by excessive use of harsh chemical products, overexposure to the sun and inadequate or infrequent oiling.

There are several home remedies to treat dull and frizzy hair. You can make a very effective hair mask for dry hair by mixing together the yolk of an egg in a cup of warm water and then adding the egg white to this mixture. Apply this mask on your hair and leave it on till it dries. Then rinse your hair thoroughly with water to get well nourished silky hair. Another useful hair mask is the pulp of an over-ripe banana mixed with avocado paste. Apply this on your hair and wash it away with water after it dries. This leaves your hair looking supple and glowing. It is also advisable to use warm water while washing your hair and shampooing, as this opens up hair cuticles and allows the conditioner to seep into the roots of the hair. Once the conditioner has been applied, rinse it off with cool water, as this ensures that the hair cuticles close again and trap the necessary moisture. This is an effective way of remedying dry and frizzy hair. Aloe vera is known to be a natural moisturizer. Applying an aloe vera based conditioner or hair cream to the hair and then leaving it on wrapped with a towel for about 15 minutes is an effective way of moisturizing the hair and avoiding dryness. You can use natural oils on dry hair to make it look softer and shinier. Jojoba oil, whose molecules have a structure similar to those of sebum, is especially effective on dry hair when applied and left overnight. Other varieties of natural oil that prevent dryness of hair are emu oil, almond oil, rosemary, avocado, shea oil, wheat germ oil, plantain oil, nettle oil and burdock oil All of them stimulate the hair and the scalp as they are rich sources of vital nutrients and vitamins. You could also mix any of these oils with some honey and apply it to your hair, as honey is a natural moisturizing agent. Honey mixed with warm water can also be applied directly on the hair after shampooing and then rinsed off.
