Darkening of skin is caused by perspiration, the use of chemical products like antiperspirants, friction between the skin and clothes, shaving and accumulation of dead skin cells due to lack of hygiene. Dark patches may also appear on the skin due to overexposure to sun and pollutants, and sometimes also due to allergic reactions to certain chemicals. Check whether you use any body product that contains aluminum. If so, discontinue its use as aluminum causes darkening of the skin. Also, drink plenty of water every day to flush out toxins from your body and generally maintain healthy skin. Drinking green tea and consuming natural sources of Vitamin C like citrus fruits also gives the skin a healthy glow. Wear natural fabrics like cotton and avoid tight, body-hugging garments.

You can also try the following simple home remedies to deal with excessive pigmentation of skin and whitening undearm:

  • Gently clean the dark underarm with a body scrub and then apply cocoa butter or emu oil to the affected area. This is of great help in the regeneration of new skin cells.
  • Rubbing the affected area with lime juice also helps, as this is a natural bleaching agent.
  • Use alum powder instead of a deodorant. Applying a little baking soda or Vitamin E oil to the armpits after a bath is an alternative too.
  • Massage your underarms with coconut oil. Then apply a paste of one teaspoon each of lime juice and cucumber juice mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder. Wash it away after 15-20 minutes. This is especially effective in lightening dark armpits.
  • Make a paste using one tablespoon yoghurt, one teaspoon gram flour, one teaspoon milk and a pinch of turmeric powder and apply it on your underarms. Leave it on till it dries and then rinse it gently with cold water.
  • Sandalwood is known to naturally lighten the skin tone. Make a paste using sandalwood powder mixed in rose water and apply it on the darkened skin. Wash it off when it dries.
  • Cabbage juice also helps restore the natural color of the skin. Grind a portion of a cabbage to pulp and extract its juice. Then apply it on the darkened skin of your underarms.
  • Potato juice is known to be a natural bleaching agent, so massage your underarms with a cotton pad dipped in fresh raw potato juice as this will effectively lighten the tone of your skin.
  • Massage the affected area vigorously with yoghurt as this too will help to even out your skin tone.
