The occurrence of white spots on various parts of the body which gradually grow and spread to cover larger patches is medically known as Leucoderma or Vitiligo, depending on whether it has been caused by a preceding disease or not. Often these white patches also become dry and lead to itching but that is not always the case. This condition is thought to occur when the melanocytes, i.e. skin cells responsible for the production of the skin pigment melanin, get destroyed in that particular patch of skin. This could occur because of antibodies attacking the melanocytes or because of interference in the proper functioning of the system. Though the main cause for this skin condition has not been found, scientists speculate that excessive mental stress can trigger the disease. Other factors that can be responsible for triggering the condition are heredity, gastro-intestinal problems such as worms, hyperthyroidism, anemia etc. Although your symptoms do match the early stages of Vitiligo, you may also be suffering from a fungal or bacterial skin disease which is causing the discoloration. It would be wide to visit a dermatologist to get an accurate diagnosis.
If you notice such white spots or patches on your skin there are several things you can do to prevent the aggravation of the problem and treat it using it natural home remedies. Some simple things that you can do to keep the condition under control is to avoid hard soaps while bathing, cosmetic products that could trigger allergic reactions and prolonged exposure to the harmful rays of the sun. Apart from these simple measures you can fall back on various home remedies that help to control the condition. It is said that drinking water that has been kept overnight in a copper vessel is beneficial for leucoderma patients since copper aids production of melanin. Another mineral important for treating this skin condition is iron and it can be obtained by increasing the consumption of green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, cereals, meat and liver. Ginger juice is also an important source of iron and helps to improve blood circulation thus helping to speed the treatment process. You can either consume 1 tbsp of ginger juice twice a day with some honey to improve the taste, or apply some ginger juice on the affected patches twice a day. You can also apply a poultice of ginger leaves on the affected patches. Figs are also recommended for treating this skin condition so you can eat 1 fig daily for a month and you will gradually notice positive results. Neem is excellent for treating all kinds of skin problems, so you should make a powder of dried leaves, flowers and fruits of the Neem tree and consume 1 tsp of the powder with water daily. This helps to fight any autoimmune disorders and treat the condition. Basil is also very beneficial for treating this condition, so you can apply some fresh basil juice, extracted by pounding the leaves, on the affected patches of the skin.
