Facial hair is usually perceived as an unwanted element, especially for women. Most women go to great lengths and endure much discomfort and pain to get rid of this unwanted hair. Before you begin any process of hair removal it is important to understand why some people have more facial hair than others. The male hormone testosterone is responsible for growth of hair on the face, underarms, limbs and pubic area while estrogen, the female hormone, controls hair growth elsewhere on the body and encourages the growth of hair on the head. Both hormones are present in men and women, but sometimes the testosterone levels in some women may be slightly higher leading to more body hair, without it being a cause for anxiety or perceived as an abnormality. If you have an alarming amount of hair on your face, you should consider consulting a doctor to test your hormone levels and take adequate medication to balance the hormones. However in most cases, this is not necessary and simple hair removal methods can be used to eliminate unwanted facial hair.
The most common methods of removing body hair are waxing, threading and tweezing. While bleaching is an option, it is not recommended since the chemicals in the bleach can harm the skin in the long run. The same applies to the use of hair removal creams, which can even cause allergic reactions and should thus be first tested for allergies before being used. Earlier women applied a mixture of lemon juice and sugar on their face and once it was dry, they gently scrubbed in the direction opposite to the hair growth before washing the face with lukewarm water. Usually this helped to get rid of the fine hair on the face. However if you have a thick growth of hair then this method of hair removal is ineffective. Most women prefer waxing, threading and tweezing for removal of hair on the upper lips, side locks and between the eyebrows. However these methods are quite painful and do not offer permanent results. The hair usually grows back after a few weeks and thus you have to make regular visits to the salon to get rid of the facial hair. Recent methods of hair removal, such as laser treatments and electrolysis use laser rays and electric currents to destroy the hair follicles. These treatments are more permanent in nature, but they are extremely costly and not without the risk of side effects such as skin burns and scarring.
