Dandruff basically refers to a skin condition in which the skin of the scalp becomes excessively dry and the layers separate from the scalp in silvery white scales which fall off in flakes every time you brush your hair or run your fingers through your hair. When this falls on your clothes it can make you look un-kept and seem as though you do not maintain proper hygiene practices. Dandruff can also cause severe itching on the scalp surface which can lead to redness and much discomfort. The main causes for dandruff include the use of harsh hair products, constipation, wrong eating habits, dietary deficiencies and extreme physical and mental stress. There are several home remedies that can help to treat dandruff problems, but you must first start by improving your lifestyle. It is important to have a healthy balanced diet with adequate rest and exercise in order to have healthy skin and hair. You should also drink plenty of water throughout the day since it washes out the toxins. It also regulates bowel movements to keep your system clean and also naturally moisturizes the skin and hair.

Fenugreek seeds are excellent for combating dandruff problems. You can soak 2 tbsp of fenugreek seeds overnight in water and grind them to a paste the next morning. This paste can then be applied on the scalp and allowed to stay for around half an hour before you wash your hair using a mild shampoo with herbal base. You can also prepare an herbal shampoo at home by mixing soap nut with acacia concinna. Another good herbal shampoo can be prepared at home by mixing 2 tbsp green gram powder with ½ a cup of yoghurt. Regular application of beet juice or snake gourd juice on the scalp the night before you have to wash your hair is excellent for treating dandruff problems. Lemon juice is also excellent for treating dandruff so you can mix some lemon juice in coconut oil and massage your scalp vigorously using this oil around 30 minutes to an hour before you shampoo your hair. Alternately you can squeeze the juice of 1 lemon in a mug of water and use this water as a last rinse after you have finished shampooing your hair. This helps to keep your hair and scalp squeaky clean and also makes your hair soft and shiny. Another effective hair rinse for combating dandruff problems can be prepared by diluting apple cider vinegar in water in the proportion of 1:4.
