Graying of hair is a natural process associated with advancing age and most people start sporting a few silver hairs once they cross the age of 35 or 40 years. Appearance of gray hair before this age usually causes much distress amongst men and women alike, since nobody likes to appear older than they are. Premature graying of hair is usually genetic but it can also occur due to extreme mental stress and fatigue which interferes with the proper circulation of blood and the supply of essential nutrients to your hair. This in turn affects the production of sebum by the sebaceous glands of the skin, which is responsible for the hair color. It is also important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet packed with vitamins, proteins and minerals required to keep the system healthy and fit. Sometimes exposure of the hair to constant and extreme heat in various hair treatments used for straightening and perming hair or chemical treatments used to color hair can also damage the hair leading to premature graying.

You should take care to avoid exposing your hair to harsh chemical products or excessive heat which can lead to early appearance of gray hair. Apart from this you can resort to a number of simple home remedies which are efficient and help to treat and prevent premature graying. The best hair tonic for premature graying is the juice of Indian gooseberry. You should consume 1 spoonful of this juice twice a day. Alternately you can soak pieces of a dried Indian gooseberry in water overnight and apply this water on your scalp around an hour before you wash your hair. This soaks into the scalp and helps to restore the natural color of your hair. You can also chop a few pieces of Indian gooseberry, dry the pieces in the sun and then mix it with some coconut oil. You can boil the coconut oil till it becomes black and then store this oil for regular head massage before you wash your hair. Alternately you can chop ribbed gourd and boil it with some coconut oil to prepare oil that is beneficial for treating premature graying. Remember not to peel the Indian gooseberry or the ribbed gourd before you use it since the main nutrients are found in the skin. Fenugreek seeds are also beneficial for treating premature graying, so you can soak the seeds overnight in water and then grind them to a paste the next morning. This paste can be applied on the scalp and allowed to work its magic for half an hour before you wash it off using lukewarm water.
