Excessive hair fall has numerous possible causes, and it is often difficult to detect which ones may be at work in a particular case. Some amount of hair fall is of course natural, and you need to take this into account. On an average, a human being sheds between 50 and 100 hairs in a single day. A lot of this is bound to occur when you are combing or washing your hair. Many people see this hair loss and unnecessarily panic, thinking that something is wrong.

Of course, if you estimate that you are losing more than 100 hairs in a day, this could be a sign that something is in fact wrong. The first thing you should look at is your hair care. This includes protecting your hair from damage, an area that many people neglect. Using a proper shampoo, conditioner, and so on is certainly important. However, this is useless if your hair is going to be exposed to sunlight for hours on end, or if it is unnecessarily exposed to strong winds, pollution, or rough handling on a daily basis. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you need to cover your hair to protect it from damage. Wear a scarf or a hat, and if possible, keep your hair tied in a ponytail. You should also be careful when handling your hair. Never comb it when it is wet, and do not dry it vigorously with a towel either. Hair is very delicate when wet, and can break easily. Allow your hair to dry naturally after gently soaking up the excess water with a towel, and only then comb it. Be gentle when washing your hair too - work the shampoo into your hair and scalp with slow, gentle movements. It is also advisable to detangle and comb your hair before washing it, so as to make it easier to shampoo. Remember to detangle your hair with your fingertips - the comb is not meant for this purpose.

You should also examine your diet and try to detect any deficiency or imbalance. Several nutrients are necessary for healthy hair, and a lack of any one could cause the hair to look dull, dry, or simply fall. Your diet needs to be well rounded - very often, a strict, restrictive diet can cause hair loss.

If your hair continues to fall in spite of all this care, you need to consult a doctor. Many health conditions, such as hyperthyroidism, can cause hair loss, and it is important to diagnose these conditions as soon as possible.
