Dandruff is usually accompanied by an itchy feeling on the scalp and an appearance flakes of skin on the scalp. Although it happens to most of us at some point in our lives, having dandruff is often an unpleasant experience for us. Dandruff is generally accompanied by an itchy scalp; however scratching your scalp will only aggravate your problem as it causes more flaking to occur. Normally our body replaces millions of cells daily to form new skin.

Therefore most people have a small negligible amount of dead skin cells on their scalp at all times. But dandruff is caused by a fungus present on our scalp called malassezia. In small numbers this fungus is harmless... but when it starts to multiply it causes a mild inflammation of our skin which produces a large number of dead cells. These cells mix with the natural oil present on our skin to form small clusters of cells that appear to be white and flaky and this is dandruff. The common causes for this fungus to multiply are varied. For some people it is because of hormonal imbalances, infrequent shampooing or stress. The common misconception is that it is caused by dry skin. On the other hand there are those that believe that it is caused by excessively oily skin, this too is a misconception. Do not use harsh shampoos to try to control the amount of oil in your hair as this will only damage your hair.

But like in most common disorders of the body our diet should be the first one to be corrected. Drinking plenty of water through the day is a good idea. Eat salads and lots of leafy vegetables and fresh fruit. This is the most effective way to have healthy skin.

Dandruff is easy to control and if you try these remedies they are sure to work for you.

  • Almond oil is good for your scalp. Use it to massage your scalp. After doing this dip a towel in hot water and wrap it around your head for about twenty minutes. Repeat this twice to thrice a week.
  • You can also make a very effective anti-dandruff shampoo by boiling Indian Gooseberry, Acacia concinna and soapnut. This shampoo reduces dandruff within a month and makes the scalp healthier.

As we age it is natural for our hair to turn grey. In younger people it has been linked to problems like stress and improper diet. Our skin contains glands called sebaceous glands that secrete an oily substance called sebum. Sebum is responsible for nourishing our and giving it luster and blackness. When sebum is not enough our hair starts to grey. A nutritious diet is the best to prevent premature graying. A home made conditioner can be made by cooking coconut oil, castor oil and raw pieces of turmeric. This preparation when applied regularly prevents further graying by nourishing hair.
