It is extremely upsetting to have skin problems, but there is little that is more worrisome than black lips. Lips that are cracked, dry or dark in color not only affect the over-all appearance of a person, they also make a person look sickly and point to a lack of nutrition or bad lifestyle choices. The main causes for dark lips include allergies to certain cosmetic products or use of cheap brands of lipsticks and lip balms which harm the skin of the lips. Exposure to the harmful effects of the sun's ultra violet rays, excessively dry skin and dietary deficiencies are some of the secondary causes. Excessive consumption of tea and coffee and chain smoking are also responsible for black lips. There are several simple home remedies that can help to reverse the effects of bad products or lifestyle choices which have led to black lips.

The most important thing to prevent and treat black lips is a well balanced diet which includes fresh fruits and vegetables rich in all the essential nutrients. A diet that is deficient in the essential nutrients reflects in the haggard appearance of the skin and dark, cracked lips. Since dark lips are often a natural consequence of dry lips, you should ensure that you keep your lips moisturized by drinking plenty of water and fresh fruit juices to hydrate your skin and body. In addition to this, you should moisturize your lips using some petroleum jelly which also prevents the lips from cracking. Apart from petroleum jelly you can also apply a good quality lip balm or lipstick. You should invest in a good lip balm or lipstick with SPF of 20 or more, to protect your lips from the sun's harmful rays. If you notice that your lips have started becoming darker after you switched brands, you should immediately stop using that product. When you are at home, you can also rub some clarified butter or fresh cream onto your lips to moisturize them. Another good way to get rid of dark lips is by gently exfoliating the upper layer of dead skin on the lips, with a soft toothbrush. However if your lips are dry and cracked you should avoid doing this. You can wet your lips first by wiping them with a cotton ball soaked in cold milk and then gently rub the toothbrush over the lips to exfoliate them and reveal the soft pink skin underneath. You can also apply a mixture of lemon and honey on the lips and wash it off after 15 to 20 minutes, following it by applying a good lip balm. This helps to lighten the lips and keep them soft. Above all, you should improve your lifestyle by avoiding excessive consumption of tea, coffee and cigarettes.
