Castor oil for treating ringworm

I have had ring worm and used different ointments but it comes back. Can castor oil get rid of ring worm forever? And if so can I apply it to my hair too? Is castor oil flammable? And where can I buy castor oil from?

Many stores stocking general provisions will also stock castor oil, but if the stores around you don't, the oil should be easily available in any medical store. Castor oil is used for a variety of skin problems, but by itself it does not have particularly strong anti fungal properties. Therefore, if you are planning to use it to treat your ringworm problem, it is quite unlikely to work. Castor oil is used as an additive in food, to prevent the growth of mould, which is a fungus. However, when used for skin infections, it is always combined with a more potent anti fungal drug such as miconazole or saperconazole.

If you do decide to try out castor oil anyway, one precaution you need to take is to ensure that it does not get into your eyes. As for its flammability, any vegetable oil will burn, but it is not clear as to why you are asking this question. You can heat the oil quite safely, and you don't need to be worried about your skin catching fire if you apply castor oil and work near an open flame, if this is what you are worried about. Standard precautions that are taken when heating oil or working near open flames should be enough to keep you safe.

If you frequently develop ringworm infections, you should probably consult a doctor. Your question gives the impression that you have been self medicating. This may be fine in some situations, but with a recurrent infection, it is better to get professional medical advice.

It is also very likely that there is a problem in your environment or your hygiene levels. Fungi thrive on moisture, and skin that is constantly damp is prone to such infections. Sportspersons also often develop ringworm, because the fungus is usually present in swimming pools and locker rooms, and gets passed around through shared towels, clothes, and sports equipment. Avoid sharing any such items with anyone, including a household member. It is quite possible that the infection is being passed back and forth between you and a household member. In locker rooms and around swimming pools, do not walk around barefoot. Always keep some sort of footwear on, and at the end of the day, wash your feet, your footwear, and your clothes with a suitable fungicide. Always use a mix of two different fungicides, so as to reduce the chances of the fungus developing resistance.
