Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to the skin getting tanned. While many people try to tan their skin during summer to obtain that golden or bronzed look, sometimes the skin gets excessively tanned. Usually the tan lasts for a few months, especially if you are constantly exposed to the sun and as long as the skin does not get burnt, there is nothing harmful in a deep tan. However if you want to get rid of the tan or lighten the skin tone you can try some of the following home remedies. Turmeric is excellent for improving the skin tone and complexion, so you should prepare a paste by mixing freshly ground turmeric powder with some raw milk, which you can apply on the affected areas and allow it to dry, washing it off with cold water after around 20 minutes. You can also make a paste with turmeric powder, lemon and honey. The lemon naturally bleaches the skin and honey is also beneficial for improving the complexion. However be careful to avoid the sun completely after this treatment since lemon increases the skin's sensitivity to the sun's rays. Rubbing the tanned skin regularly with a raw potato can also help to gradually bleach the skin. Similarly rubbing the tanned skin with a tomato or wiping the skin with a cotton ball that has been dipped in tomato juice is beneficial in lightening the skin color.

If the tan is excessive and the skin has been burnt, you should gently wipe the affected skin with cold milk or cucumber juice. This helps to soothe the burn and is also beneficial for the skin. Regular application of Aloe Vera juice on the affected skin helps to treat the burn and improve the skin complexion. Vitamin E is also beneficial for treating sunburns and improving skin complexion, so you can gently massage the affected area with some Vitamin E oil twice or thrice a day. Regular application of a paste of sandalwood powder and rose water helps to cool the skin and gradually get rid of the tan. Apart from this you should try and avoid excessive exposure to the sun, keeping your skin covered by wearing loose cotton clothing with long sleeves. The use of a good sunscreen lotion with a high SPF factor is also important to prevent the skin from tanning. Finally it is important to keep the skin naturally moisturized by drinking plenty of water and fresh fruit juices.
