Your skin can change in terms of both color as well as texture from a sun burn. This is extremely easy to understand and explain. If you have seen heat and fire at work, you will be able to follow this better, as it is quite simple to understand. The top most layer of skin is extremely thin and is so fine that it is constantly shedding. This layer is what typically gets exposed to the direct and harmful rays of the sun if you are out without protection. When you apply constant heat to any surface which is delicate, you will see it first reddening with the heat application. This is what typically happens to your skin. If you have a mild tan, then you should be aware that the sun has had a minimal effect on the skin yet. Beyond a point, the skin has the tendency to retain the heat that it absorbs as well. So if you are exposed to the sun constantly, after a while, you will notice that your skin moved from becoming red to dark red or brown. This color would actually depend upon what the natural color of your skin is. If you are fair skinned, you will turn a deep red, or possibly a mild mix of red as well as brown. If you are dark skinned, you will turn darker brown. But essentially, this is the color of skin that has gotten burnt due to direct, constant and long exposure to the sun.

Sometimes, you may also notice that your skin color continues to change even though you have moved into the shade. The reason for this could be two fold. One part is that the heat retained in the body can continue to act from inside the skin for a while after you have retired from the sun. The other part of the reason could also be that if you are in shade and the sun is shining down hard, you could still be getting filtered sunlight that continues to work on skin. This is extremely common and happens quite regularly. You should try never to leave your skin exposed directly to the harsh rays of the sun. This is neither safe for you nor healthy in the long run. This is also the leading cause of skin cancer. Always use sun tan lotion when going out in the sun, and keep applying frequently for better protection.
