Hair care advice

Genetic factors decide the kind of hair you have, however other factors such as your diet, lifestyle and the products you use can either improve or ruin your hair. Dull, lifeless hair is usually an indication of lack of adequate nourishment, exposure to extreme heat and wind and use of harsh chemical products on your hair. The best way to have healthy, shiny hair is to ensure that you drink plenty of water and consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals such as zinc, iron and iodine.

There are other simply ways for making your hair healthy and silky. Aloe Vera is known as the best remedy for many problems, including dull hair. Regular application of Aloe Vera gel in your hair leaves your hair looking clean and shiny since it replenishes your hair with natural proteins, locks in the natural moisture and encourages natural growth of hair. Always use mild shampoos with a natural base to wash your hair. You can even prepare an egg shampoo at home by  mixing 1 egg, 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon castile soup and ½ cup of water or herbal tea. You can rinse your hair with an apple cider vinegar and water mixture or lemon juice and water mixture to achieve best results. Adding a teaspoon of baking soda to your shampoo before washing your hair also ensures that your hair appears squeaky clean and shiny.

Silky hair tips

It is essential to maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins, proteins and minerals, consume adequate amounts of water, avoid excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes and lead a relatively stress-free lifestyle. The results of this healthy lifestyle will reflect positively on your hair. For an immediate shiny appearance, you can use black tea, beer or even diluted vinegar as a last rinse after your shampoo. Lemon juice mixed with water and used to rinse hair also gives them a shiny, healthy look. You can also moisturise your hair with a mixture of 3 teaspoons honey with 1 pint of water. Rub this into your hair and let it stay overnight before washing if off for a lustrous appearance.

Apple Cider Vinegar is also excellent for the hair since it leaves it squeaky clean, dandruff free and shiny. After shampooing and rinsing your hair, pour 2 cups of apple cider vinegar solution (1/4th cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water) into your hair and wash it off with cold water after sometime. Regularly massaging your scalp with coconut oil boiled with a few petals of hibiscus flower, cooled and stored also gives your hair a naturally shiny look. Alternately you could boil coconut oil with 6-8 crushed black pepper corns and a few leaves of holy basil. Applying sour yogurt on the hair for 15 minutes before washing it off also leaves the hair silky.
