Hair whitening and graying is a natural consequence of age and occurs due to the death of the pigment cells at the root of each individual strand of hair. These cells are called melanocytes that produce the skin pigment called melanin and this is what gives hair its color. At a certain trigger point that is defined in human DNA, the melanocytes start to die out and the hair then has no pigment in it to color it, giving it the gray appearance.

When you are at a stage where you are partially graying, there are usually two options of hair coloring that you can go for. One is a demi-permanent hair color and the other is a permanent color. You should slowly move from demi permanent to permanent to avoid a radical transformation to your look. Demi permanent hair dye is made up of permanent hair dye and mixed with developer that fills the hair shaft with color. This method is more reliable for dealing with gray hair, which has not completely taken over the head. This is because it can be specifically used to target the graying portions thereby giving a more natural look. These however will only last you for about 20 shampoo sessions and after that, you will have to touch up the color once again. Permanent hair dye uses a chemical process that allows for deeper penetration into the hair shaft for the hair color and will not fade away with the use of shampoos. To this level, it is considered permanent. However, no coloring solutions are truly permanent in the sense that it does not change the color of the new growing hair so you still need to go for touch up sessions.

Since you mentioned that the hair has just lost its color at the back, maybe you could also explore the possibility of trimming your hair to the point where the grays are not visible anymore. This is a possibility that you will need to discuss with a hair stylist along with the possibility of coloring and what colors and shades would suit you the best. A word of caution is required at this point. Hair coloring is truly an art and not just a matter of slapping on colors. There are shades that need to be applied and different color combinations as well, so it is advised that you go to a professional hair-coloring expert otherwise you could end up with a shade of hair you do not want.
