Dry hair, which is caused due to overexposure to direct sunlight, chlorine, heat styling or just plain neglect, can be treated with proper conditioning and moisturizing. Also, if not treated, dry hair can and ultimately will result in hair loss, as the lack of moisture will cause the hair to become brittle. Dry hair can be treated simply by properly moisturizing and conditioning your hair. Use a moisturizer which contains essential fatty acids like safflower oil.

You can prevent your hair from drying out by following these simple pointers.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. When out, use a conditioner or wear a hat.
  • Wear a swimming cap when in a swimming pool or in salt water as the chemicals present in pools and salt water can be damaging to you hair
  • Follow a healthy diet. Dry hair sometimes can indicate a poor unbalanced diet or even a case of mild dehydration.
  • Vitamins A, C and E are good remedies for dry hair, try as much as possible to include them in your diet

Dandruff is caused by a variety of reasons, some of which are lack or rest, stress or mental strain, hormonal imbalances, improper use of hair products and can even result due to improper nutrition. Dandruff is a natural process and you cannot really rid yourself of it. You can however control it and make it more manageable. To lessen your dandruff, make sure you:

  • Use a shampoo that contains cytostatic agents like selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione.
  • Ensure that your treatment is accompanied by a proper diet. Vitamin B and B6 help in regulating dandruff so make sure to include those in your diet.

You can also use home remedies like:

  • A warm oil massage with aloe or almond oil. You can leave the oil on overnight and wash off with a shampoo in the morning.
  • Applying a well beaten raw egg to your head once a week will also help considerably. Make sure you wash your hair thoroughly after this with cold water.
  • A mixture of vinegar and hot water applied into the scalp is known to lessen dandruff.

Split ends occur because of hair that is made brittle due to excessive brushing, coloring and other chemical treatments. Split ends cannot be repaired and have to be chopped off. They can be prevented by periodic hair cuts and regular moisturizing. To prevent split ends, avoid using heated appliances like hair dryers as they rob hair of its natural moisture and also elastic bands and other hair accessories that can damage your hair when being removed.

If all the necessary precautions are taken to prevent dry hair, dandruff and split ends, you should see a marked decrease in the rate of hair fall as these are the biggest reasons for loss of hair.
