We all have skin pores, which are actually the openings through which the hair follicles come out. Pores also help in the release of sebum, which coats our skin and keeps it moist, and sweat, which is of course needed to regulate the body's temperature. Usually, pores are so tiny that you can barely see them, but in some people, the pores are open and enlarged, primarily because of oily skin. Basically, the pores enlarge when there is excessive sebum production from the sebaceous glands. Open pores are thought to make skin prone to acne, blackheads, and pimples because dead skin cells tend to block the pores resulting in a build up of sebum. To make matters worse, one cannot close the pores permanently. However, the pores can definitely be reduced in size, and the skin can be kept oil free. It's very important to regularly use a cleanser and toner after washing your face, as these get rid of dead skin cells and tighten the pores.

There are also many home remedies that will reduce the size of your pores considerably and give an even texture to your skin. For instance, tomato contains natural toning agents, and can be applied in either juice or paste form directly on the pores. Let the juice or paste stay on your skin for 20 minutes, and then wash it off with water. You can also combine tomato with a few drops of lemon juice or sandalwood. These combinations help in reducing the sebum production and the size of pores. Another effective mix for controlling oil production and giving your skin an even texture is gram flour, a pinch of turmeric, lemon, and milk. Apply the face pack and keep it on your skin for about 20 minutes. Then wash it off with water.

You can also directly apply cucumber juice on your skin and wash off with plain water after it has dried. Application of the pulp or juice of papaya, peach, or pineapple also seems to tighten the pores in many cases. After applying any of the above, let it stay till it dries, and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Replacing your soap with powdered orange peel will also help close pores. Oatmeal and gram flour also have an exfoliating effect, and you can mix the two of them with turmeric and rose water. Apply this paste on your skin, allow it to dry, and as a last step, wash your face with cold water.
