Premature grey hair can be attributed to many factors like an improper diet, which is a diet lacking in nutrients like B vitamins, iron, copper and iodine, excessive stress and mental strain. Other factors known to contribute to hair graying are an unclean condition of the scalp, drying hair with an electric dryer and excessive use of strong hair dyes and other chemical based hair gels.

Black hair turns white when a pigment called melanin ceases to be produced in the hair roots. Thus when new hair grows in, it grows white or grey.

There are several home remedies available to help stop hair from graying. Some of them are:

  • Application of Indian gooseberry - this is considered to be one of the best cures for grey and falling hair. The gooseberry can be made into a paste and massaged onto the scalp. It can also be made into a mixture by boiling a few pieces in coconut oil before being applied to the scalp.
  • Mix about a spoon full of salt into a cup of strong black tea and massage the solution on your head.
  • Make a paste of 2 spoons of Lawsonia inermis powder, 1 spoon of yogurt, 1 spoon of fenugreek, 3 spoons of coffee, 2 spoons of basil juice and 3 spoons of mint juice and apply the mixture to your hair. Wash off thoroughly with shampoo after about 3 hours.
  • Massage your scalp and hair with butter made from cow milk at least twice a week.
  • You can also massage your scalp with a mixture of coconut oil and lemon juice a few times every week. Or you can mix lemon juice in castor oil and add some Lawsonia inermis into the mixture. Apply the mixture evenly over the scalp, and bathe after an hour.

Graying of hair can also be lessened and even prevented with the help of a proper diet. Several nutrients that are essential to your diet are:

  • Vitamin A: Dark green vegetables & yellow fruits.
  • Vitamin B: Fresh green leafy vegetables, cereals, bananas, tomatoes, cauliflower, yogurt and wheat germ.
  • Minerals: You can get zinc, copper, and iron from foods such as chicken, green vegetables, parsley, eggs, sunflower seeds, shellfish, nuts, and whole grain. Bananas are rich in iodine.

Devitalizing foods like white flour, refined sugar, soft drinks and pastries should be avoided. These simple home remedies will not only curtail your condition, but will improve the overall quality of your hair.
