Curly hair has a strong tendency to get dry and rough, so yours is quite a common problem. In some cases, dry hair may be due to inadequate production of sebum by the scalp or it may be brought about by harsh hair products or a harsh environment. However, with curly hair, in a large number of cases the problem is a lot more basic and simple. The scalp produces an adequate amount of sebum, but due to the curly nature of the hair, this sebum does not spread over the entire hair shaft. With straight hair, and even with wavy hair, sebum spreads quite easily from the scalp to the tip of every hair shaft. With curly hair, this does not happen, resulting in dryness and eventual roughness. Fortunately, there is a rather simple solution to this problem. To help spread the sebum over your hair, all you need to do is comb it regularly. This not only spreads the sebum from the scalp, it also stimulates the scalp to produce more sebum. Of course, you may not see results immediately - but after a week of regular combing, the dryness will have reduced considerably.
In case this does not help, you will need to consider the other possibilities. First ensure that your hair care products are not the problem. Ensure that your shampoo and conditioner are meant for dry, rough hair, but even if they are, you should probably try switching brands, just to see if a different brand suits your hair better. Avoid using any unnecessary products such as mousse or gel, as these tend to dry the hair and scalp. You should also avoid exposing your hair to harsh conditions such as long periods of direct sunlight, strong winds, or heavy pollution. Whenever you are likely to experience such conditions, ensure that you keep your hair covered. Keep your hair tied and under a hat or scarf at such times, even if you are not too happy with the way it looks.
If this does not help, you should try massaging your scalp daily, in addition to the combing routine. This too may stimulate your scalp to produce more sebum. If this too is unsuccessful, you should try an oil massage once or twice a week. Use coconut oil to massage your scalp at night, and in the morning, wash it off normally. Once a month, you can also apply the yolk of an egg on your hair and scalp; do this about half an hour before washing your hair.
