Honestly, there is no reason for one not to be able to grow one's hair as long or as short as one pleases, as there is no medical or other reason against it. The only reason that can normally be attributed to this kind of advice is that longer hair is difficult to maintain in modern times and requires more maintenance and hair care. It is in fact interesting to note that in many ancient cultures, the length of one's hair was considered a symbol of status, beauty, and pride - to the extent that longer hair was even sported by men. Therefore, the final verdict on hair length is that it is totally up to you how long you wish to grow your hair. Hair length however does cause some problems. Hair is made up of a protein called keratin and this protein tends to behave erratically over time by losing its original sheen, curling up when there is excessive humidity, and changing color as it ages. To combat these problems, you have to set up a proper hair care regime.

Keeping your hair clean is one of the most important parts of hair care. Hair accumulates dirt, sebum from the skin, and pollutants from the air. All of these and sometimes even the water your wash it in then becomes a consideration. You have to ensure primarily that you are not washing your hair in hard water, as this will cause the hair to start frizzing. This is because the alkalinity of the water starts affecting the PH levels of your hair. If necessary, wash your hair in bottled water. The choice of shampoo is very important. A shampoo's basic reason for use is to act as a detergent. When you shampoo though, you have to follow a certain procedure: first, soak your hair in cold water so that when you shampoo you do not lose too many strands. Then, apply the shampoo to the palm of your hands and then in waves along the length of your hair. Massage your scalp with the shampoo and run the lather over the remaining length of your hair. Rinse your hair after that in slightly warm water.

Conditioning is the next important step. There are many types of conditioners to apply on the hair like reconstructors that rebuild damaged hair, detanglers, moisturizers, thermal protectors and oils. You need to use these depending on the needs of your hair.
