The premature loss of color in the hair can be quit disturbing for anyone. Most people would generally expect their hair to turn white or grey, but would assume it to happen when they are much older. They get a shock to find that while a teenager, their hair suddenly becomes white or grey. However, there can be a number of possible causes for this sudden change in hair color. Anything from bad nutrition to stress as well as important factors like genetics can be a leading cause of the development.

Stress or worry can apply significant amount of strain on the cells present in the scalp causing the cells to suffocate the root of the hair and hence stopping any nutrition from reaching the hair. If the diet lacks essential ingredients like iron, copper, iodine and B vitamins, it could help accelerate the loss of color in the hair. The hair receives its nourishment from the oily substances excreted from the sebaceous glands. The oil contains important substances that help with the luster and blackness or color of the hair. Most often, along with the topical methods of treatment for coloring of the hair, the best option is a change in diet, allowing the hair to receive its nourishment directly from the blood stream.

Some helpful home remedies that have varying degrees of success are:

  • Drying a few pieces of ribbed gourd under some amount of shade. When completely dry, soak the pieces in coconut oil for 4 days and then boil the mixture until all that remains is a black residue. Massage this residue into your scalp.
  • Your diet should start to contain a lot of vegetables and fruits as they help treat premature graying of hair. You must also avoid foods that are rich in oil, pastries, jam, refined flour and sugar, spicy food as well as hot food and chilies.
  • Before every meal, consume a mixture of yogurt with one tablespoon of yeast.
  • Indian gooseberry is highly recommended for the retention of original color for the hair. Cut the fruit into pieces and dry them after which you must put them into coconut oil until it turns into a powder. Apply this over the hair.
  • An increased intake of curry leaves are also said to be highly beneficial in treating premature graying of the hair as they provide strength and vitality to the roots of the hair. The new hair roots will also contain the original pigmentation.
