Under normal circumstances, one would say that the dark spots on the top of your feet are simple a result of overexposure of your feet to the sun. This is highly likely if your wear open top shoes. However, as you mention the existence of a rash and urge to scratch the area as well as the apparent spread of the condition, it is more likely to be a case of athlete's foot. Athlete's foot is a very common fungal infection that would mainly affect the upper layers of the skin around the areas of the toes and top of the foot. Athlete's foot is a highly communicable disease that can be contracted by simply touching an infected person. It generally thrives in damp areas. When infected with athlete's foot, the affected area will tend to harbor various degrees of itching and burning. The skin may also appear to peel off and you might also experience some cracking and bleeding. Athletes foot is most often contracted by wearing unclean socks which are most commonly of synthetic material, keeping your toe fingers either wet or dirty for a substantial amount of time. It is also contracted by feet that are excessively sweaty, a bruise or cracks on the foot, or spending long hours in high moisture environments, for example, changing or locker rooms or the shower or bathrooms in gyms.

If the condition you currently have is, in fact athlete's foot, you can try a few of the following remedies:

  • Applying cornstarch on your feet and in between your toes before putting on a pair of socks or shoes will help cure the athlete's foot while also making sure the feet stay dry.
  • Tea tree oil is a well known ingredient for a number of home remedies because of its antifungal properties. Rub some of the oil over the affected areas for a few days. This should help considerably with the condition.
  • To reduce the amount of itching and burning, you could also try to soak your feet in a basin of mouth wash. Its antiseptic properties will help reduce any inflammation there may be.
  • Apple cider vinegar is also very beneficial when dealing with athlete's foot. Create a mixture of one part pure apple cider vinegar and one part of warm water and soak your feet in this for about 20 minutes. After this, clean both feet using gentle soap and dry the feet thoroughly. Do this twice a day for 2 weeks to get the best results.
