Leukoderma is a condition where the skin starts to turn white in patches as a result of it losing its natural pigmentation. Leukoderma can affect any person at any time but is most often seen in teenagers as well as young adults. For some unknown reason, women seem to be far more susceptible to leukoderma as well. The condition can be extremely stressful and can be even more prominent if it occurs on somebody with darker original skin pigmentation. There are a number of causes that could lead to leukoderma. These include the heredity factor, where it can passed down within families from one generation to another as well as other factors such as excessive mental stress, the presence of parasites or worms in the alimentary canal, impaired liver functions like when afflicted by jaundice or injuries arising from burns. The loss of pigmentation on the skin could also lead to a very high sensitivity of the skin to the direct rays of the sun. The original melanin is a protective force that prevents the suns ultra violet rays from causing cell augmentation or even skin cancer to the skin cells. Without the protection of melanin, the individual is highly susceptible to these conditions. It is also important to know that all white patches on the skin are not necessarily leukoderma. To help you identify, you will need to notice if there is a gradual increase in the size of the patches, as well as an outline that is darker than the surrounding unaffected skin. If some ultraviolet light is shone over the patch, it will appear to have a milky appearance.

Some home remedies that could help with this ailment include:

  • Soaking psoralea seeds in ginger juice for about three days, while making sure that the ginger juice is changed regularly each day. After that, the seeds must be dried in some shade and then ground into a fine powder. You must then have 1 gram of this powder along with a glass of milk each day, for the next thirty days to help get rid of the white patches.
  • You can also make a paste by combining equal parts of red clay and ginger and applying this on the affected areas and washing it off when it has dried.
  • Holy basil has also proved to be extremely beneficial in the treatment of leukoderma and its consumption in its raw form or even a decoction created from the plants leaves and stem work equally well.
