Dark lips are starting to become a growing concern amongst people of all ages. While dark lips are well suited for people with dark skin, they can look really odd on a person with a fair complexion. There are a number of reasons why the lips may darken over a period of time. Habits like smoking and the excessive consumption of caffeine or tea are the prime reasons as to why a person's lips turn dark. The obvious solution to an issue borne out of this situation is to break the habit causing the condition. Allergic reactions to the type of lipsticks and chap sticks are another common reason for darkened lips. This is primarily due to certain chemicals that are a part of the production for some lipsticks. If this is the cause, you need to stop using that brand or type of lipstick immediately before the condition gets any worse.
While heredity can also be a cause for the condition, one of the most prominent reasons for darkened lips today, is the excessive exposure to the sun and its harmful ultra violet rays. The skin cells and the cells that make up the lips are the same and are equally prone to complications arising from ultra violet ray exposure like cell augmentation and skin cancer. The skin's way of fighting this is to produce additional quantities of Melanin, which is the coloring agent of the skin and an integral part of its defense mechanism. Just like the skin will turn a shade darker after some time, the lips will do so at a slightly faster pace given the fact that its only source of moisture is what it receives from the mouth. In order to avoid this, it is essential that you make sure your lips are well moisturized at all time whether you choose the use of petroleum jelly of just plain saliva. Exfoliating your lips every night before going to sleep will help get rid of the dead skin and allow the new skin on your lips to become more prominent. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent and rubbing a piece of lemon on your lips regularly will help tone down the dark pigmentation. You could also try massaging your lips every night using a mixture of ½ a teaspoon, each, of glycerin, lemon juice and castor oil and apply it to your lips every night before going to sleep. Applying some fresh coconut milk to the lips gives it a glow and avoids any darkening.
