Facial hair in women can be quite a distressing attribute. While it holds no medical implications or complications, any sign of facial hair on a woman is not welcomed in almost any social community. For more aesthetic reasons than any other, facial hair will usually lead a lot of individuals to becoming very upset and distraught about it. While women, just like men, have hair that cover almost all parts of the body, the hormone levels are largely to blame, when it comes to the prominence of the hair follicles. Hormones known as androgens, which comprise of testosterone, are encountered in both - men and women. However, men have about ten times higher levels of androgens than women, which causes the hair on the body and face to appear darker than the hair follicles on a woman's body. If the woman has an unnaturally high level of androgens in her body, she could also develop the darker and longer version of body and facial hair. There are a number of reasons that could lead to this condition. While heredity is a very common cause, others include - poly cystic ovarian syndrome which will show symptoms of facial hair growth on the chin and under the lips; medications that stimulate and increase testosterone levels in the body such as steroids; an imbalance in hormone levels such as the estrogen levels, which are female hormones, being lower than their male counterparts - androgens.

Laser hair removal has its drawbacks. This is especially true when the patient is dark skinned. The laser is programmed to identify the hair follicle by looking for a dark color. If the skin is also dark, this confuses the laser and it might end up doing considerable damage to the upper layers of your skin rather than doing anything to the hair follicle. If a permanent solution to the situation is what you desire, as of today, only one safe option exists. Electrolysis kits are easily available and portable kits that could let you perform the treatment in the comfort of your own home. The machine works on the principle of sending a small electrical impulse to the hair follicle, which will kill it, causing it to fall of in a few days. Since the hair follicle is removed along with its root, there is no re-growth of the hair. It is a relatively painless procedure. Other temporary measures for hair removal include waxing, tweezing or even the use of chemically based hair removal creams.
