Black and curly hair needs special conditioning because its shape makes it dry and frizzy. As a result, black curly hairs are found to be prone to breakage. With straight hair, the oils from the sebaceous glands can travel easily through the shaft of the hair, and thereby keep the hair strands strong and healthy. However, in with curly hair, the oils cannot travel through the hair shaft easily enough and often does not reach to the hair ends. This makes the hair ends look dry and fragile. Therefore, you need to pay special attention to deep conditioning so that your hair remains moisturized and appears shiny, healthy, and strong.

Deep conditioning, is the application of any conditioner to your hair for an extended period - usually, for about half an hour or so. Sometimes, for appropriate deep conditioning, you may also have to leave the conditioner applied overnight. Also, for effective deep conditioning, you may also need to apply some heat to your hair while conditioning. The heat will help swell the hair shaft and allow better absorption of the hair conditioner. The type of hair conditioner to be applied also needs careful consideration. If your hair has enough elasticity but lacks strength, you should use protein conditioners. And if your hair is brittle, you should apply a moisturizing conditioner. However, it is best to use both these types of conditioners in a balanced way so that you gain both elasticity and strength of your hair.

While choosing a conditioner you should also keep the following points in mind:

  • Use conditioners that have natural oils like coconut, rosemary, jojoba, and olive.
  • Use a cream-based conditioner; avoid clear and gel-based conditioners.
  • Avoid using conditioners that may contain isopropyl alcohol, petroleum or mineral oils, and sulfates.

And now, here are a few natural deep conditioners that you can easily prepare at home.

  • Mayonnaise: Apply mayonnaise directly on your hair, wrap your head in a towel, and leave it for about 20 minutes before washing it away. You can also apply a mix of mayonnaise and avocado pulp on your hair in a similar way.
  • Egg: Make a mixture by beating one egg yolk and a spoonful of olive oil. Add some water to it and use this mixture on your hair. Massage your hair thoroughly with this mixture and then wash off with water.
  • Olive oil: You can massage some warm olive oil on your hair and then wrap your head with a towel soaked in lukewarm water. Leave your head wrapped like that for about half an hour and then wash off with water.
