Hair is genetically programmed to be straight, wavy, curly, or "kinky"; due to heredity we usually take on the hair type of one of our parents or family members. Hair texture varies greatly from one individual to the next, and can be fine or thick, coarse or glossy, straight, wavy, or even tightly curled (what is often described as "kinky"). Curly and kinky hair usually tends to be much drier than straight hair, because its very structure is different. In many cases, it is simply a matter of sebum from the scalp being unable to spread over the entire hair shaft because of the texture of the hair. If you have curly hair then this could be one of the reasons why your hair is dry.

If your hair is dry, you should first of all ensure that you are using a suitable shampoo - very often a change of shampoo is all that is needed. Each individual's hair types is different, and one shampoo, even if it is meant for dry hair, may not work for everyone who has dry hair. Regular oiling of your hair and dry flakey scalp may also help, but before you do this, you should start a routine of combing your hair at least thrice a day. This stimulates the scalp to produce more sebum (the natural oil produced by the skin), and also spreads the sebum that is on your scalp more evenly over your hair. If a couple of weeks of such daily combing shows no results, you should start oiling your hair twice or thrice a week with coconut oil. If even this does not seem to work, I suggest that you try a herbal hair oil or an aloe vera based hair shampoo.

There are also some simple home remedies that you can try:

  • Mix two tablespoons of gram flour, half a tablespoon of Acacia concinna powder, and one cup of coconut milk. Gently massage the paste into your scalp and hair, and then wash it out. You generally do not need to use a shampoo after this conditioning, unless you are unhappy with the smell.
  • Simply beat an egg with approximately one cup of milk, and when the two are well mixed, apply the foam on your scalp and hair. After ten or fifteen minutes, rinse your hair out, and shampoo it normally. The egg tends to leave a rather strong smell, so a simple rinse will not be enough.
