A number of people are faced with the common problem of hair loss, and it is quite a worrying problem, especially considering that it is essentially harmless. Many of us are worried about early baldness and how it will affect the way we look. To begin with, hair loss is normal up to approximately 100 strands of hair per day, as new strands grow to replace the older ones. People with a thicker growth may lose more hair per day. If you are losing more hair than this, then first of all, if you wash your hair daily, you will need to stop, as this practice tends to weaken the roots. Excessive brushing and combing of hair also leads to hair fall, especially if this is not done gently. Hair loss could be hereditary as well, and in such cases, not much can be done about it.

Problems related to thyroid and effects of medication and pregnancy can also lead to hair loss, due to the hormonal imbalance in the body. In such cases, only successful resolution of the underlying problem will stop the hair loss. Constant exposure to sunlight and pollution also damage and weaken hair, and this is something you should protect against by covering your hair when you are outdoors.

Another possible reason for large amounts of falling hair is the occurrence of acute dandruff. When we have dandruff, we usually notice white or yellow flakes especially on our shoulders. The scalp also tends to itch due to its presence. Dead cells are shed continuously by the scalp. But when the pH balance of the skin is affected, it leads to higher secretions from the sebaceous glands, causing the dead cells to stick to the scalp and then fall off in clumps, as dandruff. Other common reasons are scalp infections, dry skin or basic unhygienic conditions. With the removal of dandruff, hair fall can be checked and brought under control. Dandruff may also be caused due to stress, poor diet and smoking, and these factors should also be addressed.

To get rid of dandruff, you can try regular head massages, which stimulate the blood flow and natural oil flow to the scalp, remove dead cells and reduce dandruff as well as hair loss. Hair tonics that are prepared through a combination of olive, almond and castor oils in proportions that are equal have also proved to be excellent remedies in the reduction of hair fall, as they improve the overall hair texture and stimulate the growth of hair. You can also try using an over the counter anti dandruff shampoo, but if this too is unsuccessful, you should consult a doctor.
