Thick, shiny, and smooth hair without split ends is an indication of healthy hair. Typically, when the cuticle of the hair is stripped away, it results in split ends. This implies that either the natural oil in the scalp is unable to reach the hair ends, or that the cortex is losing moisture. In any case, the hair becomes dry, looks dull, and splits at the end. It is almost impossible to undo split ends, but with care and perseverance, you can minimize the damage greatly. First of all, trim the split parts, and then regrow your hair with care, ensuring split ends don't recur. Next, make sure you drink ample amounts of water everyday. Consuming a balanced diet full of green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, and fresh fruits also helps grow healthy hair. You should also make sure that you do not expose your hair to extreme weather conditions and pollution. Always cover your hair when you step out in the sun, or if there is a lot of wind and pollution. Try not to use chemical-based hair products and styling equipment like blow dryers, hair irons, and curlers. Also, never brush your hair when it's wet.

To avoid split ends, you can also try some home remedies. Oil therapy is very effective in treating this problem. You can make a moisturizing blend by mixing one teaspoon of castor oil, olive oil and mustard oil each, massaging it well into your scalp and applying it to the full length of your hair. Cover your head with a towel soaked in hot water, and let it stay for 20 minutes, then shampoo it off with a mild herbal shampoo. You can also apply a mixture of one teaspoon almond oil and one egg yolk onto your scalp and hair, and leave it on for an hour before washing it off. You can also make a head mask of mashed avocado, apply it to damp hair, let it stay on for approximately 30 minutes, and then wash it off. For better results, add olive oil to the avocado pulp.

To make your hair shiny and smooth, give it a hot oil treatment. Wash your hair and apply extra virgin olive oil after warming it up a bit. Leave the oil on for about 15 minutes after wearing a shower cap. Rinse your hair thoroughly after that. Another remedy that makes hair shiny and smooth is soaking lemon peels in coconut oil for about 10 days and keeping the jar out in the sun. Sieve and apply this tonic to your hair regularly. You can use the water of boiled tea leaves or mix a cup of white vinegar and water each as a final rinse.
