Damaged hair advice Healthy hair follicles comprise of an inner cortex and a tightly closed, smooth cuticle layer that protects and prevents the cortex from drying up. It helps with the maintenance of moisture balance, and gives your hair its elasticity, shine and strength. Hair damage implies that there has been damage to the cuticle layer or even a complete removal of the layer.
Some of the most common causes of damaged hair are styling treatments, and chemicals from beauty products, physical wear, environmental exposure and hair braids.
Most people don't realize that friction causes the most amount of damage. Using a rough brush or comb, salt particles left in the hair after a swim, pillow cases, rubber bands, and other hair accessories, all cause some amount of friction. Hair that has just been washed is particularly vulnerable because it loses it's elasticity when wet.
Exposure to the environment also causes some damage to hair. Ultraviolet rays don't have much effect on healthy and particularly on dark hair, but can be damaging to chemically processed hair. Strong wind can also damage cuticles.
