Pores are tiny openings in the skin through which the hair grows out. They are also outlets for sebum, which is essential for protection against microbial infections and also keeps the skin moisturized. Pores also allow sweat to emerge from the body, which is necessary in order to keep our body temperature constant. The condition you are referring to is that of open or enlarged pores. Pores may be enlarged either due to genetic reasons or oily skin. Many people inherit enlarged pores, in which case there is really nothing that you can do about it, except to keep them clean by proper skin care and try to tighten them temporarily. Open pores due to oily skin can be taken care of by keeping the oil under control. The excess oil and dead skin cells accumulate around the pores making them look enlarged. This causes blackheads. The skin pores on certain areas of the body such as the nose or central part of the face appear more prominent as the sebaceous glands around the hair follicles are larger and produce more oil.

There are many home remedies and skin care tips that may be used to reduce the appearance of large pores. Tomato is a good toning agent. Tomato juice applied regularly on the skin with a cotton ball helps to shrink the pores and make them appear smaller. You could also add tomato juice to sandalwood powder and apply the paste on your face. This helps to reduce the production of sebum and decrease the size of the pores. Honey also helps to tone up the pores and reduces oiliness. It can be applied directly on the face with a few drops of lemon juice. It could also be added to milk powder and applied. A very effective way to tighten pores is to gently rub an ice cube wrapped in a cotton cloth on your face. Mashed papaya is also good for toning pores. An effective face pack can be made with oatmeal, gram flour, rose water, curd and a few drops of lemon juice. This tightens the pores and improves the complexion. The white portion of an egg can also be applied on the face, as it has toning properties. This will also enhance the complexion. You may also apply buttermilk to which a little table salt has been added. Massage this into the skin for a few minutes, and wash it off with warm water. Repeat this several times a week for best results.
