Skin pigmentation results from an increased production of the pigment melanin, which is a coloring agent. The production of melanin is influenced by the hormones that are produced by the endocrinal system. Some internal conditions such as menopause and other disorders may affect the endocrinal system, causing hormonal imbalance. This is what causes an over-secretion of melanin. In addition to this, excessive keratinization, caused by the presence of dead cells on the skin surface leads to the darkening of the skin. The skin surface begins to absorb the excess melanin and hence appears dark. Skin pigmentation is a symptom that results due to several internal disorders. A correct diagnosis of these skin problems must be made in order to effectively treat the pigmentation. An outbreak of dark spots or freckles on the body could be due to Addison's disease. This causes damage and impairment of the cortical parts of the adrenal glands. Over-absorption of iron from food in the intestinal tract can also result in a bronze pigmentation appearing all over the body. Melasma is a condition in which brown patches appear on the face, due to hormonal changes in the body. The pigmentation increases due to increased exposure to the sun.
