Dandruff is a condition that affects the scalp and results in the appearance of flakes of skin. Skin cells on the scalp are constantly being renewed, and the old cells are pushed to the surface and out of the scalp. In individuals who suffer from dandruff, this process takes place faster and more dead skin is shed, resulting in noticeable flakes. A severe form of dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis, which results in larger, greasier flakes, and affects other parts of the body too. Dandruff does not normally cause hair loss, but it could lead you to rub and scratch your head excessively, leading to hair fall. It is advisable to consult a doctor in order to determine the other possible causes of the hair loss.
Dandruff can be caused due to internal and external factors. Internal factors are stress, anemia, allergies, poor diet, heredity and hormonal imbalance. External reasons could be cold weather, excessive use of hair dryers, frequent shampooing and use of excessive and improper hair care products. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome and vitamin B deficiency can also cause hormonal imbalances, which can trigger dandruff. Using combs belonging to people with dandruff that has been caused by fungus or ringworm may also be a cause. Dandruff generally does not require a visit to the doctor, but if it is severe and causes too much irritation or itching, it is advisable to see a doctor.
