Acne is a skin condition characterized by what is commonly known as pimples or zits. It generally occurs on the face, neck and back. Acne normally begins with blackheads. Blackheads arise when dead skin cells, oil and bacteria accumulate in the pores of the skin. This clogs the pores and the melanin present in the skin cells reacts with the air, causing pigmentation and giving it a black color. When these blackheads get infected, they become inflamed and result in red pimples. A spread of pimples is called acne. There are several causes that can lead to acne. Stress causes the adrenal glands to produce increased levels of hormones which results in the enlargement of the oil glands. Hormones also cause the sebaceous glands to overact and produce more oil. Bad cosmetics can lead to the spread of bacteria which enters the pores. Certain medication could also lead to the outbreak of acne. Acne can sometimes be mild, but can leave scars.
Acne can be prevented in a number of ways. Keeping the face clean is very important. It is advisable that you wash your face at least three times a day with a mild cleanser. It is also helpful if you keep your hair off your face, as hair contains natural oils in it which can cause an acne breakout when it comes in contact with your skin. One of the easiest ways to prevent an acne break out is to eat a balanced diet containing plenty of fruits and vegetables. Oily food must be avoided, and if you find that acne develops after the consumption of certain foods, then those foods should be avoided too. Drinking plenty of water is also very important as it helps to detoxify the body. Exercise also contributes in keeping acne at bay as it cuts down the effects of stress. Stress causes the release of certain hormones into the skin, which increases the likelihood of developing acne. Using oil free products and natural cosmetics is also beneficial for your skin. It is also recommended that you do not pop or squeeze pimples as this will cause the bacteria to spread to other areas of the skin. This will also leave scars. Avoid over exposure to the sun as it causes an increase in the production of sebum, natural oil produced by the oil glands. You may also take vitamin B5 and zinc supplements daily to strengthen your skin's resistance to acne.
