Dark circles can be quite an embarrassing condition for a person experiencing it. While they do not allude to any severe medical conditions, most of the mental stress arises from the fact that these dark circles or puffy eyes will negatively affect a person's overall appearance. However, knowing what has caused the condition could win you half the battle as, when you know exactly what you are fighting against; it makes the battle much easier to win. There are a number of causes that could lead to the appearance of dark circles as well as puffy eyes. One of the most common causes is heredity, where the condition is passed down from previous generations. When this is the underlying cause, the dark circles tend to become more prominent around the time you turn 40. However, this is more of an observation rather than a rule, as some people can experience an extreme condition of dark circles much before the stated age. Another well known cause for the condition is the lack of sufficient sleep. This will lead to excessive tiredness which causes paleness in the skin, which will then allow the blood underneath the skin to become more visible and appear much darker and sometimes blue. A severe lack of nutrients in a person's diet as well as the lack of a balanced diet can cause a discoloration of the area under the eyes. Other well known causes of the condition include a reaction of the body to medications that are being taken or even an allergic reaction as well as eczema or asthma. When trying to get rid of the condition, it is equally important to know how to prevent its occurrence. A daily intake of about 8 to 10 glasses of water is extremely beneficial, as is the abstinence from smoking or alcohol intake. Starting on a well balanced diet while staying away from junk food will help prevent the occurrence of dark circles. If you already have noticeable dark circles, you can try to get rid of them by making a juice using equal amounts of potatoes and cucumber. Apply the juice under the eyes using the help of a cotton swab and let it dry for about 20 minutes before washing your eyes using cold water. The application of almond oil to the affected area and massaging it into the skin for about 15 minutes is a well known and highly effective home remedy for this condition.
